Awesome Liquor Bottle Hookahs

Last month I saw a pic of some awesome looking hookahs made out of liquor bottles. Started checking them out and they looked pretty simple to knock out with parts from Home Depot. I actually had a bunch of stuff from left over test parts on the Bar machine so worked out.

Instead of a normal hookah hose, they’re the mini shot version of the bottle with a clear tubing hose covered in velvet.

This is an X-Rated 750ml. At first had a normal hookah hose since was having a hard time finding the mini’s for the mouth piece but finally got it.

Check out my hookah gallery for pics during the making of them. Next I have a big 1.75ml Patron bottle that I’m going to do 2 hoses on. I’ll write up a build post for that one probably this week sometime. Here is the bottle that’s finally empty.

Bar Progress

Been working back on the UI for the bar machine. Still a bunch of stuff to figure out but got a lot taken care of.

  • PIN pad for login
  • Page user level restriction
  • Change drink sizes (glasses)
  • System Status page
  • Sorting of drink listing
  • Rating Display.
  • Sliding pages for drink listing

Playing w/ 3D Printer

I picked up a Prusa Mendel 3D printer from Lolzbot.com. I picked up one of these because I couldnt wait for the Printrbot from Kickstarter that should be coming next month. Definitely a little learning curve but its been a couple weeks are starting to get the hang of everything.

The first thing I made from scratch are knobs for my stove. I had 2 missing and 1 is broken so played with OpenSCAD designing it and it worked out pretty good. I need to learn a few tricks still on printing but my workaround made it happen. Ill post up some pics of the printer and some stuff I printed soon.

Swapping to pumps

The pressure system just didnt work out. Swapping to pumps. I picked all of them up last month and got them cleaned and ready to start using. I had to swap out the quick connects on one side of the valves so now they are regular barbs. I left the quick connects on the spout side since I like that tubing more. Ill post up pics when Im finished with getting them all hooked up.

Radio Pirate is alive!

Finally its here! After a bit of work and testing Radio Pirate is working again.

Radio Pirate is an automatic calling system build with asterisk to automaticly call a radio station. A lot of times the lines are busy or your stuck on ringing for it to just drop out well here is your solution. When you submit the call you will receive a call and you will sit there waiting while we repeatedly try and get you to a live person at the radio station.

Its built to pretty much stay within asterisk and no SQL. It did limit the amount of options and ease of use but was something cool to make like that. Im thinking of releasing all the source code in case it would help anyone with techniques for other projects.

Try it out and let me know how it works! If you want to grab the audio when you successfully connect its located at http://radiopirate.chrismendes.com/audio. Need to sort through to find it, its in NUMBER-UNIXTIMESTAMP.mp3 format.

Funny Allison Clips for Asterisk

Someone hired Allison Smith to record some funny little clips. Allison is basically the voice of Asterisk. It was released last year but I barely found them!

2nd Automated Bar Demo w/ Video

Cleaned and replaced a bunch of wiring that was using jumpers to something a little better. Rewrote the arduino code to allow all bottles to pour at once and stop when needed instead of a bottle at a time.

Still need to enter a bunch of data in the database for the drinks and finish out the rest of the software. What is shown in the video is pretty much all that has been built so far.

With all that said.. Here is another demo.

I know its pouring slow, I need to up the pressure soon. Its not a real recipe either I just plugged in some data to fill the cup.

Finished Wiring

Got some more time to finish up the electrical stuff. Mounted and wired up the boards and tested it out. Everything is working except for number 3. Check out the video of it running through a test cycle.

Put together a little database shell so hopefully can get some code written up to start getting the UI built. And the corking method is still up in the air, might just run with what I got.

Pumps are a No-go

Got those pumps a few weeks ago. Tried to test them out but they just totally fail for my needs. Pump has to be primed with liquid to get it going and then once power is cut off, the liquid drains out of the tubing back in to the bottle. No way I could see to get a consistant flow or measurment. Ive seen a couple automated drink machines that use pumps, not sure how they worked out since Ive only seen pics.

Any one seen a pump bar machine in action??

Heres a pic of the pumps(P-25A) I got to test:

Board Finally Came In

I finally got my board from pcbuniverse.com. It looks pretty cool. I had most of the components to try and test it out but had to make a run to radioshack since the TIP31 Transistors still havent came in so just bought a couple. Soldered everything in and tested it out and works perfect. Just need to wait for the rest of the parts and I can finish those up.

Im not very happy with the corks still. I attempted last month to create some new ones and they are alot better then the rubbercorks with zipties but these still involve dremeling the plastic and using glue to set the tubes in. The glue also breaks apart becuase if you try to pull them out of the bottle it flexes and doesnt hold. Only thing is they are easy to slide right in and can hold the pressure.

New corks

Thinking about just switching over to pumps because finally I found the perfect pumps. All the pumps Ive been finding are to large and just wouldnt work right but found some ones that are used in coffee machines and juice dispensers. Main reason I did the pressure system was to use carbonated liquids but might do a dual system if these work out good. Ordered a couple but still waiting to recieve them in the mail.
